This is a unique opportunity to join our musical community, receive professional training, and play a key role in our worship and events.
About St John’s Church
Situated atop a historic hill, St John’s Church boasts a rich heritage dating back to the 13th century and is a Grade 1 Listed building. Our church is home to a welcoming Christian community, part of the Church of England, with services ranging from cathedral to café style. We have a strong musical tradition, including an excellent robed choir, and our doors are open daily for worship and visitors.
Musical Life at St John’s
· Choirs:
Regular Choir: 15 members, leading weekly worship
Festival Choir: 30 members, performing at major festivals and concerts
Affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music

Kawai upright piano (purchased 2024)
Two Yamaha Clavinova digital pianos for rehearsals and informal services
The Organ Scholar Role
As Organ Scholar, you will:
Support the Director of Music in regular services, special events, and concerts
Receive mentorship and weekly feedback
Participate in a comprehensive training programme, including organ tuition at Chelmsford Cathedral
Develop skills in organ and piano accompaniment, choral music, and ensemble leadership
Contribute to the musical life of the church, including key services (Carol Service, Good Friday, Easter Day, Remembrance Sunday) and other festivals as desired
Scholarship Details
Value: Up to £1,500 for one year, funding organ tuition fees
Tuition: Provided by the Assistant Director of Music at Chelmsford Cathedral
Mentorship: Regular support from the Director of Music at St John’s
Duration: 1st September to 31st July (may be extended by mutual consent)
Leave: 7 weeks between September and July (to be agreed in advance), plus August (total 11 weeks annual leave)
Progress Reviews: Termly written and verbal feedback; parental feedback if under 18
Eligibility Criteria
Age: 15–21 (or until the end of full-time studies, whichever is sooner)
Minimum proficiency: Grade 6 ABRSM (or equivalent) at piano or organ
Previous organ experience desirable but not essential. Applications will be accepted from pianists who wish to “convert” to the organ
Enthusiasm for developing skills in organ playing, accompaniment, and choral music
Willingness to work with singers, instrumentalists, and vocal ensembles
Commitment to attend and prepare for organ lessons and contribute to Sunday services

Complete the application form and include a personal statement explaining your motivation HERE
Provide names of two referees at least one of which should be an instrumental teacher
Submit your application by 30th June 2026
Auditions and interviews will be held in early/mid-July
Audition and Interview:
Audition (approx. 20 minutes) with the Director of Music and an independent music adviser
Perform two contrasting pieces (organ and/or piano)
Sight-reading test (approx. Grade 6 ABRSM standard) which can be undertaken on the organ or piano according to the candidate’s preference
Aural tests (approx. Grade 6/7 ABRSM standard)
Interview (approx. 25 minutes) with the Rector, Director of Music, and independent music adviser
Safeguarding:
Candidates over 18 will require a DBS check
Candidates under 18 will be subject to church safeguarding procedures
